20 recently discovered species get Aboriginal names in a world-record for indigenous recognition in scientific names for taxa.
Discovery of a single new species is quite a big deal, but 31 in one go is quite an achievement.
This month in a series of papers, Snakeman Raymond Hoser has published the discoveries of 31 new species of Australian lizard.
Found in all mainland states of Australia, this includes two skinks from Victoria, both medium-sized taxa, one being quite distinctive and with body stripes, cutting quite a fine profile.
That one is in the north-east of the State extending into New South Wales and including the Australian Capital Territory.
It is believed to have diverged from its nearest relative north from around Sydney about 4 MYA.
The other Victorian species, a larger species found from the snowy Mountains in New South Wales, south to around Melbourne diverged from its nearest relative over 3 MYA.
While neither is believed to be endangered, Hoser says that both are under long-term threat from competing aggressive native species that are doing better in areas heavily disturbed by humans that are able to attain critical population numbers sufficient to swamp the other lizards in remaining pockets of undisturbed habitat.
28 of the newly named lizard species are skinks, being the largest group of reptiles in Australia, based on number of species and abundance.
However for most of the last 200 years they have been relatively understudied. In recent years however, Hoser has named over 100 species in Australia alone, with most Australian species of lizards now believed to have been discovered and formally named.
Many of the new taxa have been given aboriginal scientific names, with Hoser now having named over 20 taxa with aboriginal names.
One of the better-known taxa is the common tree frog Kumanjayiwalkerus kumanjayi Hoser, 2020 found in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, named in honour of aboriginal Kumanjayi Walker, shot and killed by racist NT cop Zachary Rolfe.
Significantly the name Litoria ridibunda Rowley et al., 2023 is an illegally coined junior synonym of Kumanjayiwalkerus kumanjayi Hoser, 2020.
The newer name was an illegally coined name by a few Wolfgang Wuster gang thieves trying to ERASE Aboriginal species names from the scientific record as per a mantra they recently published in a document called Wuster et al. 2021.
This is the notorious cohort of pseudo-scientists who when not faking scientific discoveries include people who kidnapped black boys for sex in Africa over some decades (Don Broadley and Bill Branch), another who had sex with peoples pet dogs in Darwin, that he posted videos of online (Adam Britton) and other morally debased individuals including for example another convicted criminal in West Australia who was found by the courts there to have been shooting Aboriginals for entertainment as well as a police-protected drug dealer in Bendigo, Victoria who ran over a potential client when he should have been in jail for his earlier crimes.
Under the rules of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), the oldest name for a species is the one that must be used and so the correct name for the tree frog is Kumanjayiwalkerus kumanjayi Hoser, 2020.
In 2021, the ICZN published a scathing ruling against the Wuster gang and their attempts to coin new names for species previously discovered by others, including for Kumanjayiwalkerus kumanjayi Hoser, 2020.
The Wuster cohort also recently lost a copyright case in Australia in which they had attempted to rename a gecko from New South Wales, Marlenegecko shireenhoserae Hoser, 2017 as Oedura elegans Hoskin et al. 2019 and then conned the tabloid media into believing their cohort had actually discovered the species, knowing full well that it was Snakeman Raymond Hoser who had in fact discovered and named the species a year earlier.
That action put the cohort outside of the Australian Copyright Act as well as the ICZN rules!
Among the recently named 31 species of lizards (from Feb 2024), those with aboriginal names include the following 14 taxa:

Except for Kumanjayiwalkerus kumanjayi Hoser, 2020 all the other taxon names are various kinds of lizards.
The recently named Victorian species are Ctenotus sonnemannorum, Hoser, 2024 (depicted at the top of this page) named in honour of wildlife conservation icons Neil and Cathy Sonnemann, both from near Beechworth in north-east Victoria and Liopholis adelynhoserae Hoser, 2024, named in honour of the Snakeman's eldest daughter in recognition of 25 years contributions to animal welfare.
